Patterson, of Shannon, Mississippi, stole a Beechcraft King Air C90 twin-engine plane and took off from Tupelo Regional Airport at 5:08 a.m. local time.

 

According to Quaka, Patterson informed Lee County 911 from the plane that he intended to crash it into the West Main Walmart in Tupelo at 5:23 a.m.

Quaka claimed that Tupelo Police mediators spoke with the pilot and persuaded him to make a landing at the Tupelo airport.

The arrested pilot had identified by Tupelo Police Chief John Quaka as Cory Wayne Patterson, a ten-year Tupelo Aviation employee.
